The Newcomer

Mary Kay Andrews the New York Times bestselling author and ueen of the Beach Reads delivers her next page turner for the summer with The NewcomerIn trouble and on the runAfter she discovers her sister Tanya dead on the floor of her fashionable New York City townhouse Letty Carnahan is certain she knows who did it Tanya’s ex; sleazy real estate entrepreneur Evan Wingfield Even in the grip of grief and panic Letty heeds her late sister’s warnings “If anything bad happens to me it’s Evan Promise me you’ll take Maya and run Promise me” So Letty grabs her sister’s Mercedes and hits the road. This was my sadly my least favorite Mary Kay Andrews book yetfor a book that s easily 150 pages too long always a MKA staple the woman needs a better editing system the book just felt rushed and the plot too cut and dry It needed some surprises or twists and turns that you didn t see coming from a mile away MKA s books notoriously for me are way too long but they re usually solid 4 45 star reads but there wasn t much of a mystery to this fish out of water mystery story The book revolves around a NYC woman named Letty whose sister has been murdered and takes her niece on the run to a run down Mom and Pop hotel where they encounter every stereotypical Florida old person character you can imagine and ofcourse a local town cop for the main character to fall in love with My favorite character in the book was the undercover FBI agent she was a hoot I liked her scenes and wish there was of her could have cropped about 100 pages off the book by removing all the nonsense about the hotel guests at the Murmuring Surf Getting to know them wasn t necessary to the plot of Letty and her niece Everything about the story was predictable and while I did enjoy the resolution the book overall just did not satisfy me 35 stars Thank you to NetGalley

This wasn t a typical MKA beach read book It was a bit darker than her normal stories and that s good and bad I went into it expecting one thing and got another Letty is a New Yorker whose sister has gotten into things that she doesn t want to completely keep Letty in the loop of Her sister had always told her that if anything happened to her that meant her ex did it and she should take her daughter and hide her so when she finds her sister dead she takes her to a tiny little motel in Florida that she found a picture of in her sisters bag There she found someplace to stay and got a job and even started to feel a little normal with her niece and her new life However the motel owners son is a cop and he figures out that Letty was on the run and tries to help her clear her name with the help of undercover FBI agent who was one of the better characters And of course Letty and the cop fell in love in the midst of it all I wanted to like it than I did Thanks to netgalley for this ARC

Thank you Net Galley for an advance copy for an honest review I have read many of Mary Kay Andrews books which I have enjoyed This one was good and I did enjoy it I liked the main character Letty she is just a regular person who is doing the best she can When her sister is murdered she takes her niece out of harms way She ends up at an old fashion motel on the beach in Florida where she hides out I liked the characters who are staying at the motel and they really enriched the story The mystery was light and easily solved The romance was good I do like a book that is told from different points of view If you like Mary Kay Andrews and a nice story this is for you
