This review was originally posted at Vampire Book ClubOne of the reasons I recommend Stacia Kane's Downside Ghosts books so often is the remarkable character development Heroine Chess has hard edges deep seated issues and a big problem with seeing herself as valuable While Kane provided insight into Chess' past in Sacrificial Magi

This is a pretty dark novella Gritty Chess is a girl abandoned at a very young age and raised by The Church but this is not any church you or I have been to Her past is traumatic she has very little sense of self worth She drinks and gets high to deal with the life she is struggling through And she's 18 But Chess is smart Street smart yes but with an inner intelligence that not everyone has She's on the cusp of adulthood and she's scared bu

This is an introduction to the Downside Ghosts series and my least favorite since it occurs before Chess meets Horrible There are series inaccuracies here in that Chess meets people that in a later book she meets again for the first time That really bothers me But other than that it's a good read well written with good pacing Chess is filled with even angst which is appropriate since she's younger here We see how she beg

Finding Magic

Karen Marie Moning has called Stacia Kane’s Downside Ghosts series “dark sexy urban fantasy at its finest” Now in this breathtakingly suspenseful eBook novella Kane has written a preuel to her thrilling series Before Chess Putnam was a magic wielding Churchwitch she was a student in the Church of Real Truth with a keen sensitivity to magic a strong rebellious streak and a penchant for self destruction And in Fi. The thing that always strikes me about these books is just how incredibly well Stacia Kane knows her own characters Her complete commitment to painting them faithfully is reflected in every single decision they make every word they say every gesture every reaction Of course this is something that authors are supposed to be doing but I rarely see it at this level of detail When it comes to her characters Stacia Kane doesn t write filler Nothing is wasted For example this tiny scene from Finding Magic where Chess is talking to a classmate Agnew Debunking I ve already talked to Elder Griffin you know about how that s what I want to do He said he d get me scheduled How No No she wasn t going to ask how he d managed to do that because it would make her look stupid Na ve She changed it to How do you like Elder Griffin He seems okay With that one sentence hesitation along with many other scenes in this book that are just as small she paints in a hundred tiny facets of Chess And when you ve finished these pages and stepped back from them what you get is a very rare and three dimensional view of our girl undiluted In this book Stacia Kane has lifted years of self medication and hardness from Chess and given us her much younger much vulnerable self Reading this very short novella was an intense experience just like every other Downside Ghosts book I ve read but in a few ways it was even intense Without her usual narcotic buffer in place we get to experience everything that Chess works so hard to suppress the memories that invade every corner of her life the way that her body betrays her on a daily basis her constant need to prove to everyone that she s worth something even though she knows it will never be true It s exhausting and although I would never say that it s an excuse for her to use drugs this story goes a long way towards explaining why she would want toHowever the most intense and heartbreaking thing about this story is getting to see the absolute potential that lies within Chess just how strong she really is underneath it all I love that Stacia Kane while showing us just how much was lost and allowing us to mourn for the pristine Chess that will never be also celebrates Chess wounds So much of Chess strength and her aptitude for investigation actually come from her traumatic past Even as her past is making her everyday existence almost unbearable it s helping her to be tough shrewd and dedicated I just know that someday Chess is going to realize that too and start to make peace with herself In the mean time I am in for every page of this rideAnd if all of that didn t convince you that this novella is worth a mere 099 then just allow me to innocently mention that TERRIBLE IS IN THIS BOOK For about two sentences but reallyisn t that worth 099 all by itselfPerfect Musical PairingThe Antlers I Don t Want LovePoor Chess I can practically feel her death glare every time I pick one of these wimpy indie anthems for her musical pairing She would never approve Too bad this is my review Mwa hahaha This song is about a hazy one night stand Every time he says I don t want love in that insistent but mournful way it reminds me of ChessiebombAlso seen on The Readventurer Virgin Wanted its finest” Now Lie With Me in the Church of Real Truth with a keen sensitivity to magic a strong rebellious streak and a penchant for self destruction And No Feelings Involved in Fi. SUMMARY Finding Magic

Nding Magic a grisly ghost murder becomes Chess’s baptism of fire   When eighteen year old Chess Putnam is offered the chance to train with a special team of investigators known as the Black Suad she feels torn She’s never been a team player and hates how one male Inuisitor condescends to “the new kid” But at her first bloody crime scene she gets a taste for investigation and is hooked on the high Though the. In Finding Magic we re introduced to an eighteen year old Chess who s in her final year of her studies Because of her impressive exam results Chess is given the opportunity to work with the Black Suad for a week in order to help her choose her furture career in the Church With no training Chess has to dive straight in when the Black Suad are called to investigate a murder caused by a ghost Chess is desperate to prove herself worthy of the Church but it s not easy as she finds it very difficult to work in a team Chess struggles with spending time with her mentor Jillian and the only way she can cope is by drinking vodka The Chess finds out about the murder the eager she becomes to solve the case even if it means displeasing her mentorAfter reading 4 books in the series and getting to know a Chess who is confident and sure of herself well at least when it comes to her job it was strange reading about a young Chess who had zero confidence and no self esteem in regards to anything in her life herself work friends or men It was actually comforting to already know that future Chess would be good at her job and be aware of her worth when it came to her abilities at work I did find the mystery of the murders to be a tad predictable Then again since it s a novella there really wouldn t be much room for a complex mysteryI enjoyed the scenes with Elder Griffin I initially thought that Elder Griffin had took Chess under his wing when she first started with the church at age 15 so I was suprised to see that it was only until she was 18 that they started to have a friendship I also liked the brief scene with Doyle he was actually uite a nice guy and in reading his scene I never would have suspected that he d turn out to be such a doucheI liked Trent and Vaughn and their interactions with ChessI kind of want them to appear in future books I prefered Trent over Jillian Jillian was very snake y at least Trent didn t pretend to like Chess That end glimpse of Terrible was brill Chess s perception of Terrible s looks have come a long wayI bet she never thought she d be attracted to him For a short story there s a lot of important background and history that s covered We find out how Chess became an addict I had always assumed that it started in childhood so this gives readers some much needed insight into the origins of her addiction We also get to see how and why she became a debunker the start of her relationship with Elder Griffin insight into how important the church and her work is to her Chess s first visit into the underground City why she decided she d rather live in Downside than in Church accomodation and understanding of her inability to have friendships and relationships

READ ↠ eBook, PDF or Kindle ePUB Ì Stacia Kane

Seasoned Inuisitors consider the series of ghost murders random events Chess starts to detect a pattern Is a psycho killer summoning ghosts from the City of Eternity and using them as murder weapons As Chess gets closer to the dark truth she puts herself in grave danger and risks losing everything she’s fought so hard for   Includes a special preview of Stacia Kane’s upcoming urban fantasy thriller Chasing Magi. Hm was a bit strenuous Chess the protag doesn t ring true to call her a heroine seems to have a boatload of problems Had a shitty life Has addictions Has deep issues with herself And this was so prevalent that I couldn t enjoy this book much It had a fairly good story line some inventive world building some ok mystery part but Chess is just not a good protag for me There is no humor no courage no self esteem in her Just darkness doubt and self hate And all the inner monologue doesn t help to make her endearing I just got impatient So this didn t make for an enjoyable read At least for me
