Ed with a shame that infected his soul and ravaged by demons haunting his memories Sasha ran But he could never escape Sergey or the gravitational pull of their love Nightmares trail behind his every step and weary ghosts live in the hollow chambers of his soul Hes spent a lifetime brutally eviscerating the parts of himself he despises and hes an empty shattered sh. I will admit that Tal Bauer is my favourite author out there writing at this time His books have the research and attention to detail that in my opinion put them above most other offerings It is standard practice for me to have my Kindle in one hand and Google fired up and ready in the other so I can look for myself at the places he describesWith Ascendent it was no different Following straight on from where we left them at the end of Enemies Within this story is about Sasha and Sergey and how they start to build a life together in RussiaWe spend most of our time in this book with Sasha as he battles his ingrown demons and self loathing at being gay and how this feeling is slowly killing him But we also get spend time with Sergey as he fights for his country as well as his love With a horror twist that had me peering at the words from between my fingers this is once again a superb offering from Tal BauerThese were the characters I took the least amount of interest in during the Executive Office series so I was unsure how I would take to this book but I needn t have worried Tal once again with his clever descriptive use of language drew me into the story and back into the Executive world Possibly even out doing even himself with his beautiful phrasing and painful emotionI would not recommend this as a stand alone book as it references events in the Executive Office series than once but it is a wonderful look into the world of Sasha and Sergey and a fabulous gateway to what I am sure are nail biting adventures to come

While this book can be read as a standalone fans of the Executive Office series will especially enjoy the return of Sergey and Sasha Sergey is the President of Russia who needs Sasha by his side Sasha is a Hero of Russia who loves Sergey but won t give into his feelings for fear of undermining Sergey s rebuilding of the countryThe story begins in Moscow picking up where Enemy Within left off It soon moves outward to the far reaches of Russia Siberia Andreapol and TverSasha is troubled to the point of angst Early in the book I found myself saying c mon Sasha you re Hero of Russia get it together Later characters say the same thing To restore his soul Sasha returns to Siberia to visit the shaman Kilai Kilai saved him once before and Kilai s people do not welcome him Kilai however had been waiting for himSergey is reckless and driven by his passion Years of being in control result in him showering Sasha with gifts The greatest is restarting the Russian space program so Sasha can realize his dream of being an astronaut As the book progresses Sergey sees how Sasha is made weaker by Sergey s protection He has to step back and let Sasha regain his soul While it isn t as dramatic as Sasha s journey Sergey makes his own emotional growth even while restoring Russia after Moroshkin s failed coupThe military and historical details are the right balance of intriguing without being academic There s mention of the Dead Man s switch a vestige of the Soviet nuclear program designed to fire nuclear missiles after Russia itself was obliterated by a nuclear attack Sasha is preparing to train at NASA The training materials cover the history of American space travel while Sergey fills in the Russian space history that is omittedThe sex scenes are hotter and explicit than in any of the Executive Office series They are layered with the emotional and spiritual odyssey of the two men Sergey has never given himself over to a man Sasha has never learned to be gentleThey don t have to save the world in this book but the threat is there to be battled in the rest of the series The foundational pieces are laid with precisionAll in all this is a tremendous start to the Executive Power series

While this book can be read as a standalone, fans of the Executive Office series will especially enjoy the return of Sergey and Sasha. Sergey is the President of Russia who needs Sasha by his side. Sasha is a Hero of Russia, who loves Sergey but won’t give into his feelings for fear of undermining Sergey’s rebuilding of the country.

I never liked Sasha. Of course, I felt a great deal of empathy for the character when he was introduced in "Enemy of My Enemy." Who wouldn't? Beaten and left for dead because of his sexuality? Surviving only due to his courage and desperation, and his faith in a personal hero he had never met? A heart wrenching beginning to a compl

I loved the Executive Office trilogy where these characters were introduced, but this spinoff fell a little flat. I found some aspects repetitive, and it ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, in terms of leaving an opening for a sequel. That was similar to the second Executive Office book, whereas the first book of that series had a very

Hmm I don’t know how to feel about this one. Not bad but definitely not good either. Felt rushed? I don’t know. I don’t think I’d recommend necessarily but I’m glad I read anyways. Don’t think I’ll continue with this series. Love Sasha and Sergey but this writing was over the top.
